"A summer snack you've definitely never tried before!"
If you're looking for a simple yet flavorful snack that’s both refreshing and satisfying, then you’re going to love Shor Nakhod. Whether you're having a picnic in the park, firing up the grill, or just need a light bite between meals – Shor Nakhod adds a delicious twist to any spread and is a true hidden gem of Afghan cuisine.
The name Shor Nakhod translates to “salty chickpeas” (shor = salty, nakhod = chickpea). The preparation couldn’t be easier: cooked chickpeas and potatoes are mixed with a homemade chatni–vinegar blend that gives the dish its signature tangy flavor. It's then served in small bowls and topped with fresh herbs.
In Afghanistan, Shor Nakhod is a beloved street food classic. Street vendors often offer it in handy little bowls – perfect for snacking on the go. Every family has their own take on the recipe: some add tamarind paste, others sprinkle in pomegranate seeds or an extra squeeze of lemon juice.
And the best part? Shor Nakhod is
naturally vegan,
high in protein, and
super easy to make! A refreshing snack you might not have tried yet – but one you’re sure to love..
PREPARATION
- Prepare the chatnis: For both the red and green chutney, place all ingredients in a blender and blend for about 5 minutes until smooth. Transfer each chutney into separate containers and set aside.
- Boil the potatoes: Cook the potatoes in salted water. Once tender, drain and let them cool. Peel and dice them into small cubes, then set aside.
- Mix the Shor Nakhod: In a large bowl, combine the chickpeas, potatoes, water, and vinegar. Mix well.
- To serve: Spoon 1–2 scoops of Shor Nakhod into small bowls. Top with the prepared chutney and fresh coriander – and enjoy!
